Film followed by Panel Discussion led by Rabbi Roger Klein

A Death in the City: In the Wake of Segregation –  part of the project titled On Our Watch, this film documents the 1960s fight to desegregate Cleveland’s schools, featuring scenes from the stage play A Death in the City by Faye Sholiton, a Mishkan Or member.

Marquette Williams, Director
David Hemphill, Producer
Performed by Sherrie Tolliver

The film recounts the stories of nine individuals involved in the tense decades following World War II, when civil rights activists around the country coalesced into a movement to change the racial hierarchy that had dominated so many institutions and systems in this country. Black Americans and their allies fought discrimination in the military, at the voting polls, and in trying to secure housing, bank loans, and jobs. Most notably, they aimed to eliminate racial discrimination in the education system in the hopes that American society would move closer to the promises laid out in the country’s founding documents.

Following the 70-minute film, there will be a panel of individuals involved in the production of the film, facilitated by a representative of Teaching Cleveland. We will also be joined by Rabbi Roger Klein.

There is no cost for this special program, but RSVPs are requester to Patti London at pklondon@me.com
